Supporting Healthy Smartphone Use – A Joint Message from York Headteachers

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a primary headteacher, I’m pleased to share a joint statement from school leaders across both primary and secondary schools here in York. Together, we are committed to creating calm, focused and smartphone-free learning environments for all children.

In our primary school community, we recognise how important it is to help children develop healthy relationships with technology right from the start. By working closely with other local schools, we’re encouraging families to delay introducing smartphones to children, giving them time to grow, play and connect in age-appropriate ways.

The attached letter explains more about why we are taking this approach and includes useful resources to support you at home. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. By working together, we can help ensure the very best for our children’s well-being and holistic development.

I would also like to emphasise that this does not change our existing policy for older children, who may still bring a phone to school if necessary, provided it is handed in at the office at the start of the day and collected again at home time.
