At Elvington Church of England Primary School, we take online safety extremely seriously. At the beginning of each academic year, as part of our computing curriculum, pupils are taught how to stay safe online. These important messages are revisited regularly throughout the year and reinforced across the wider curriculum.
As technology continues to play an increasingly important role in children’s lives, we recognise the importance of working together to help our pupils develop safe, responsible and positive online habits.
Our top tips for keeping children safe at home are:
- Encourage children to use devices in shared family spaces, where you can support and supervise their online activity.
- Make use of parental controls, privacy settings and age-appropriate restrictions on devices and apps.
- Talk regularly with your child about what they enjoy doing online and encourage them to share anything that worries or upsets them.
- Consider delaying giving your child their own smartphone for as long as possible. Further information can be found in our joint message from York headteachers.
- Remind your child never to share personal information, photographs or passwords with people they do not know.
- Establish healthy boundaries around screen time, particularly before bedtime.
